Merck seeks Cooperation for Green Technology in Korea

PRESS RELEASE - SEOUL - September 16, 2010- Merck KGaA, the oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company in the world, holds today an investment seminar jointly with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency(KOTRA) toward Korean companies which want to receive investment from the German company, and/or businesses, universities or research institutes which want to seek a joint R&D project.

ㅇ At the seminar, Merck will provide an overview of its business and seek ways to work together with Korean businesses involved in electronic components and renewable energy.

Being the world's No.1 manufacturer in display materials, Merck has continued investment in Korea since late 1980s, and has played a pivotal role in economic cooperation between Korea and Germany as one of German companies which invested both in R&D and in production facilities.

Merck Group acquired Serono, a Swiss biotech company and it recently acquired Millipore, a U.S. lifescience company, and it is working to integrate the organizations in Korea, while it intensifies investment not only in liquid crystals for display but also in future businesses such as new materials development and renewable energy.

The event is part of the Ministry's GAPS Program which is expected to contribute much to strengthening core capabilities of domestic small and medium-sized companies through attraction of large scale investment, as well as expansion into overseas markets, joint R&D activity and securement of new technologies
