N K Goyal, President CMAI and keynote speaker at KES 2010.
Recently, Korea IT Times was fortunate enough to correspond with Mr. NK Goyal, President of the Communications and Manufacturing Association of India, or CMAI, who will be a keynote speaker at KES 2010.

Humble beginnings and the fascination of youth

Mr. Goyal is originally from the hill state of Himachal, India, neighboring the mighty Himalayas. In his youth he was fascinated by telecommunications and the technical leaps and bounds the industry had made since 1792, when a French engineer, Claude Chappe built the first visual telegraphy system between Paris and Lille and a century later when the the conventional telephone came into being as an invention of Alexander Graham Bell. Goyal was determined to become engaged in the field and add to this rich legacy for his native India. More than four decades have past since he made this decision and today, after 41 years in the world of telecommunication, he finds himself at the center stage of the burgeoning telecom revolution in India, performing in various pivotal roles and engaging ICT activities all over India and the world.

Mr. Goyal, holds a Post Graduate Degree in Science. In addition to being the President of CMAI , he is Chairman Emeritus of the Telecom Equipments Manufacturers Association of India (TEMA); Vice Chairman, ITU APT India, Chairman CTIA, India and is actively involved in policy formulations and development of industrial policies specially related to telecom and IT sector for the Indian government. He is also Member of the Governing Council, Telecom Equipment & Services Export Promotion Council, to promote exports under Ministry of Commerce and Industries of India.

We were very interested in hearing Mr, Goyal's impressions and perspective on the KES and the relationship the Korean IT and electronics industries and market has with the CMAI.

Communications and Manufacturing Association of India

We asked Mr, Goyal to describe the nature and structure of the CMAI. He told us that the CMAI was formed as an association and registered with government of India five years ago. It is an integrated association, representing the entire information and communication technologies (ICT) sector, which includes communications, multimedia, alternate energy, IT, telecom, wireless, broadband etc. There are 42 dedicated professionals employed by the association, including 8 who serve in foreign countries. The association has a membership base of about 8,500 individuals who are engaged in one or more sub-specialties of ICT. The association is headquartered in New Delhi, India. He said that interested parties can learn a great deal about CMAI by visiting their web site at www.cmai.asia

The CMAI and KES 2010

We were interested to learn of Mr. Goyal's plans for the KES 2010 and visit to

Korea. He said that, in addition to being a keynote speaker, "My main focus is in leading an Indian delegation of about 50 members, who have an interest in discussing possibilities of trade, business and joint ventures with Korean companies. Korea is very well known in IT and broadband, wimax and we are engaging with Korean industry and companies to the mutual benefit of us both. CMAI is hopeful of initiating a minimum 50 Million in contracts during this show. The members of CMAI represent IT, telecom, wireless, computers and electronics. The scope of increased trade between our countries is very broad."

He added "India is known as the world's second largest market for telecom with 676 Million subscribers. Our broadband base is very small, with less than 10 million. We have established a target to achieve 20 million in the next two years. In this, Korea would be helpful."

Mr. Goyal also said “The CMAI will also be exhibitors at the show. Please encourage your readers to visit our exhibit. We are thankful to KEA for all the facilities which have been extended to us.

What Korean technology means to means to India

Considering the scale of ICT in India, their impact on the IT business globally and Mr. Goyal's place in the sector, we asked for his take on what the most important thing to the CMAI is about the Korean market. He responded by saying "Korea is very advanced in technology and has the world's best broadband empowered country. The IT capabilities of Korea are also world class. So, there is good chance of joint venture, technology transfers."

We asked if there were any specific companies that Mr. Goyal was looking forward to visiting with at the KES. His reply was expansive when he said "We are interested in learning about what any and all IT, computer or electronic companies have to offer."

NK Goyal and India ICT

We told Mr. Goyal that we had enjoyed reading his profile on his website, www.nkgoyals.com and asked if there was anything else that our readers might find enlightening about him as a person or as a high-level operative in the ICT of India. He said "In India NK Goyal is known as encyclopedia for IT, telecom and representative status on all of the government committees in India for ICT, spectrum, wireless, 3G, wimax, specifications, quality assurance etc".

Readers and attendees at KES 2010 are encouraged to hear what are sure to be insightful comments during Mr. Goyal's keynote speech, considering his unique perspective as a leader in India's vast and prominent ICT sector.
