As a member of the energy efficiency working group in the Green Growth Committee of the Seoul G20 Business Summit, set to be held in the middle of November, Hur Dong-soo, Chairman of GS Caltex is scheduled to present a paper on the subject of energy efficiency and green growth.
In his paper, Chairman Hur, who is a doctor of chemical engineering, will advocate the necessity of solidifying systems of building symbiotic relations between large companies and small to mid-sized businesses as well as raising the nations effectiveness of energy by improving matters related to energy efficiency, while large companies provide their knowhow of improving energy competence and reducing greenhouse gases to smaller companies and suppliers. He will also stress the necessity of drawing up a clear and sustainable system for carrying out "green symbiotic management" through support of technology for energy efficiency between large and small companies in formulating the green growth road map after the G20 Seoul Summit is completed.
Pointing out that the effect of control on greenhouse gases will be varied by industry sectors, he will emphasize that G20 should set global benchmarks of greenhouse gas control by industry sectors as essential goods should be able to be produced in any region of the world, taking account trade exposure and carbon intensity, so that manufacturers should not be disadvantaged in competition.
In addition, suggesting development direction of the transportation sector to achieve green growth, Dr. Hur will emphasize the necessity of promoting materials industries need for producing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and electric vehicles for the long run, and for increasing the production of clean diesel and hybrid vehicles that can satisfy fuel efficiency and environmental regulations of industrialized countries on a short- and mid-term basis.
In his presentation, Chairman Hur will also point out that institutional support for clean diesel vehicles, such as a boost in industry and tax related benefits until electric and fuel cell vehicles are commercialized, and recognizing that clean diesel vehicles are the future growth engine which can simultaneously contribute to finding solutions for problems related to energy usage and the environment, is necessary.
As the first private oil company in Korea, GS Caltex has been successfully operating oil and petrochemical businesses as well as diversifying into other energy sectors over the past 40 years, establishing itself as a total energy service leader in the industry.
Meanwhile, wishing for the success of the G20 Seoul Summit, GS Caltex showed their support by posting banners at its gas stations and LPG filling stations across Seoul and putting up large flashing neon signs at the top of GS Tower in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul.
