As a next-generation CNG bus releases on January 25th, the Ministry of Environment begins a project to distribute CNG hybrid buses in Seoul so as to significantly reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emission.
According to the Framework Act on Low Carbon Green Growth, the ministry set the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 30% by 2020. Thus, as a part of policies for reducing greenhouse gas in the field of transportation, the project to distribute low-carbon CNG buses is launched.
As the combination of engine, electric battery, motor and electronic control unit delivers optimum power, CNG hybrid buses can minimize fuel consumption. Therefore, their fuel efficiency is significantly improved and exhaust gases and greenhouse gases can be reduced by more than 24% compared with existing natural gas buses. In addition, while major parts of diesel hybrid buses are imported, CNG hybrid buses' main parts including electric motors and batteries are developed domestically, contributing to boosting national competitiveness.
Backed by government subsidies, 30 CNG hybrid buses will replace Seoul's natural gas buses whose persisting period expired. The ministry plans to replace all intra-city buses of the nation with CNG hybrid buses stage by stage and promote development and distribution of HCNG hybrid buses in the long term to improve environmental benefits from CNG buses.
