The iPhone 5 is not going to have the antennas around its outside edge that have been so controversial, according to an inside source. Instead, Apple is supposedly going to return to the days when its smartphones had rounded edges.

However, this doesn't mean that the iPhone 5 will have the same outer casing as the iPhone 3GS. The source for this unconfirmed information indicates that this model will be the first with an all-aluminum outer shell.

All this metal would ordinarily block the cellular and other wireless signals this device needs to communicate, so the antenna is supposedly going to be moved to the Apple logo on the back of the device, which will be made out of resin. One advantage of this new arrangement is it allegedly would permit Apple to once again offer both black and white versions of the iPhone -- due to problems with the current design, a white iPhone 4 has yet to be released.

Why the Change
The iPhone 4 uses its outer rim as a collection of antennas. While in most cases this improves the phone's wireless performance, touching a specific spot on the iPhone 4's lower left side can short out the cellular antenna enough to cause the device to lose its connection completely in areas with low signal strength.

The so-called "death grip" issue has been the source of much controversy, and caused the man responsible for the design of this smartphone to leave the company last year. Whatever the design of the iPhone 5 turns out to be, Apple will clearly have to fix this issue.

More about the iPhone 5
There have been quite a number of unconfirmed reports on the next-generation iPhone circulating on the Web in the last few weeks, all dealing with possible design changes. According to one of these, Apple is considering releasing its first smartphone with a sliding keyboard.

Another rumor indicates that the company might increase the size of the screen on the future iPhone, moving to a 4-inch display instead of the 3.5-inch one that has been on all previous versions. Apple typically releases its latest smartphone in early summer, and many are expecting the iPhone 5 to debut then too.
