The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is providing "comprehensive consulting for technology transfer" in order to help small and medium businesses and individual inventors.
The comprehensive consulting for technology transfer is a program to survey corporate demands for patents and find the matching patents to support their transaction. This program does not rest in only finding the matching patent, but goes further to comprehensively provide consultations on price negotiations, contract signing and strategies to turn the patent into business.
In particular, KIPO will survey the demands of small and medium businesses for patents by March 24. Small and medium businesses wishing to acquire and utilize patents may request it before the set deadline through the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA), the organization hosting the program. KIPO and KIPA worked on approximately 300 technology transfers in the last three years, providing benefits to small and medium businesses or prospective business starters having difficulties turning their patent into business from a lack of funds and expertise.
For example, small company A got help from KIPAs patent distribution consultant to transfer its patent to small company B for KRW 90 million, which was lump sum payment. Company B is currently preparing to turn the patent into business. In addition, prospective business starter C got help from KIPO to use patents related to kimchi lactic acid bacteria, worth KRW 30 million in license fees, from small company D and succeeded at producing a product. It is now preparing to export the product abroad. KIPO will set up a year-round bidding system of intellectual property on its Internet Patent Mart (www.ipmart.or.kr) and plans to open it in June to vitalize patent transactions online.
Director Kim Ki-beom of KIPOs Intellectual Property Promotion Division said, "KIPO will enhance support for patent transactions between companies to help them save on costs and time from no longer having to directly develop technology in tandem with the rapidly changing technological development environment."
