The National Institute of Environmental Research completed a carbon-zero building, which produces energy it consumes using 66 technologies including natural energy.

The carbon-zero building reduces energy by 40 percent through an energy load reduction technology (Passive) such as super insulation and super windows and doors. In addition, it reduces energy by 60 percent through a natural energy technology (Active) such as solar heat, sun light and geothermal heat.

The natural energy consists of sun light, which supplies power and solar heat and geothermal heat, which supply air conditioning and heating. Also, thermal energy efficiency is improved by a hybrid system, in which solar heat and geothermal heat are complementary to each other. Moreover, Green Energy Management System (GEMS) was built so as to prevent waste of electricity.

It is estimated that the carbon-zero building can reduce greenhouse gas by 100 CO2·ton a year. Assuming that the building's life is about 30 years, 3000 CO2·ton can be reduced. Using natural energy, the carbon-zero building is expected to cut down on about 1,020,000won a year.

Among the 66 technologies used for the carbon-zero building, 62 are domestic technologies and 4 were imported. In particular, the core technologies - sun light, solar heat and geothermal heat - are domestic technologies.

As a good model for low carbon green growth, the carbon-zero building is a groundbreaking building for low carbon building. The National Institute of Environmental Research said it will use the building for PR activity and education so that people can experience the effect of a carbon-zero building.
