The Ministry of Environment formed a new research team for the development of technologies to treat explosives and heavy metals in the site of shooting ranges.

Centering on Seoul National University, the research will be conducted by participation of relevant companies and universities and the investment of 13.5billion won for five years to develop remedial technologies for soil and groundwater, contaminated by explosives and heavy metals in the site of shooting ranges.

In particular, the research team will intensively research the hazard management system centering on acceptors (human body and ecosystem) and propose application plans, optimized for each polluted site.

Hazard management system: It is a system to assess the degree of hazard of pollutants on acceptors (human body and ecosystem) and decide the necessity of remedy. It has cost-effectiveness by deciding the level and the scope of remedy in a rational and efficient way.

In addition, relevant institutes and experts from home and abroad will form a consultative group to support a smooth research. A launching ceremony was held with the participation of the research team, relevant groups (MOE, Ministry of National Defense, KEITI, KECO, Korea Rural Community Corporation and K water, etc.) and experts in Seoul National University on May 11.

The research team is expected to significantly contribute to preserving national health and ecosystem by creating a total solution to investigation, assessment, remedy and management of the site of shooting ranges.
