MOFAT decided to remove the Travel alert Level 1 (Precautious) on Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture as of May 17. The ban was imposed on March 13 immediately after the massive earthquake and tsunami hit the northeastern part of Japan.
The areas in and around Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture have been recovered to almost the normal state as aftershocks abate and the earthquake situation stabilizes. The impacts of the radiation leak accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant on the areas are also negligible.
The following areas, however, will continue to be under varied levels of travel bans imposed right after the earthquake and tsunami, as well as the accident at the quake-hit Fukushima nuclear plant.
- Level 2 (Highly Cautious) : Ibaraki Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture
- Level 3 (Travel restricted) : Areas within 30-km radius of the Fukushima nuclear plant and some parts of the Fukushima Prefecture (Iitatemura, Kawamatamachi, Tamura City, and Minamisouma City)
