The Ministry of Environment and the SUDOKWON Landfill Site Management Corporation announced that from December 2007 to December 2008, 1,009,657 tons of greenhouse gas was reduced, which is equivalent to emission by 430,000 vehicles a year (assuming that a vehicle emits 180g CO2/km and drives 13,000km a year).

With regard to the reduction, the SUDOKWON Landfill Site Management Corporation went through verification and certification by CDM DOE and applied for CERs. It is expected that it can obtain CERs in this October after final deliberation by UN.

As the second issuance of CERs by the Corporation, it is expected to become twice as large as the first one.

The CDM project has been promoted by the SUDOKWON Landfill Site Management Corporation without other advanced countries technology and capital. Although the first application for verification, certification and CERs took about 20months, it was completed in about 12 months this time, showing the fact that the Corporations capability to conduct CDM projects has been enhanced.

The ministry and the corporation plan to take the lead in adaptation to climate change by obtaining CERs of 7million tons of CO2 for the period of the CDM project -- ten years.
