With world energy prices soaring and calls for energy security echoed around the globe, the demand for organizations to manage their energy performance has never been more acute.
ISO 50001, Energy management systems - Requirements with guidance for use, provides organizations with a framework to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs, and improve environmental performance. It is estimated that ISO 50001 has the potential to positively impact up to 60 percent of the world's energy use.
The standard was developed by ISO technical committee (TC) 242, Energy management, with the chairmanship held by the United States.
Keynote speaker S. Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), will offer his perspective on how organizations can harness ISO 50001 to meet the global energy challenge. Master of ceremonies Edwin Piñero, chair of ISO TC 242 and chief sustainability officer at Veolia Water America, will lead discussions on the development process, current principles, and future of ISO 50001.
Three panel sessions will cover: keys to successful implementation of an energy management system; organizations' experience with energy management internationally; and accreditation, certification, and regulation. Lane Hallenbeck, ANSI's vice president of accreditation services, will moderate the panel on accreditation, certification, and regulation, with Gary Kushnier, ANSI vice president of international policy, discussing the role of specialized regional bodies.
