Merck Presents State-of-the-Art Display Technologies

Merck Advanced Technologies Ltd. (President / Representative Director: Juergen Koenig), the Korean affiliate of Merck KGaA of Germany, is presenting an array of state-of-the-art display technologies at this year's International Meeting on Information Display (IMID_ 2011 from October 12-13. Under the motto "Perfect Pixel," Merck's IMID offerings include Smart TVs, LED-TVs, E-papers, DIDs (Digital Information Display), 3D displays, AMOLED(active matrix OLED) displays and related display materials.

 "IMID is the perfect platform for Merck to show off the newest developments made by our engineers and researchers working with liquid crystals and other display technologies, including new display components and materials," said Juergen Koenig, President / Representative Director of Merck Korea. "It is also a good opportunity to inform participants and customers about recent developments in the display business as well as new display modes and trends."

In 2008, to provide high quality products in the rapidly growing display market, Merck invested €11 million in Korea to establish its second Advanced Technology Center (ATC), which was inaugurated in May, 2010. The OLED Application Development Laboratory (ADL) was inaugurated October 5, 2011. This new state-of-the-art laboratory will focus on the synthesis, purification and chemical analysis of OLED materials tailored to customers' requirements. In Korea, Merck is focusing on the core technology of chemical materials in Korea with the intent to remain a long-term leader and contributor to the display industry.

The Merck Awards were introduced during the 2004 IMID by Merck Advanced Technologies Ltd. to celebrate the 100th anniversary of LCDs. The awards honor outstanding scientific contributions to display technologies. The winners are selected by an awards committee based upon criteria such as originality and technical significance.

Now in their eighth year, the 2011 Merck Awards went to Shin-Hyuk Yang, Jun-Yong Bak, Sung-Min Yoon, Min-Ki Ryu, Him-Chan Oh, Chi-Sun Hwang, Sang-Hee Ko Park, Jin Jang with the entry "Drain Bias Induced Instability Characteristics in Oxide Thin-Film Transistors"; Pankaj Kumar, Suck-Jae Shin, Myong-Hoon Lee, Seung-Hee Lee, Shin-Woong Kang with the entry "Direct Switching Between Planar and Focal Conic States of a Bistable Dual Frequency Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Light Shutter"; and Satoko Tezuka, Hideki Kato, Yuji Takatuka, Masato Kakihana with the entry "Synthesis of the High Luminescence Yellow (Sr, Ba)2SiO4:Eu2+ Phosphor using a Novel Water Soluble Silicon Compound". The winners of the Merck Young Scientists Award are Ji-Yun Kim, Ho-Won Lee, Sung-Hoon Kwon with the entry "Color Tunable Surface using Superparamagnetic Nanocomposite Material" and Sung-Yeop Jung, Yeon-Il Lee, Jun-Ho Youn, Hie-Tae Moon, Jin-Jang, and Jung-Ho Kim with the entry "Effect of the Active Layer Thickness on the Short-Circuit Current Analyzed by the Generalized Transfer Matrix Method"
