After only one month since a riot police officer working at Pyeongchang Police Station has started to teach Taekwondo to children, as a volunteer, three of his students have won prizes in their first competition.
Lee Jin-pyo, 22, who is working for the 112 combat force at Pyeongchang Police Station, has joined the police for military service after completing the first year of study at the Taekwondo Studies Department at Dankook University. While working at the police station, he has been training at the Korea Gymnasium in his spare time and has passed the level-5 belt test.
After hearing that the children at the gym are having difficulty entering provincial team selection competition and Provincial Governor’s Championship since there was no professional Taekwondo coach, Mr. Lee has been teaching the young Taekwondo students for about a month now and three of them have succeeded in winning prizes in their first competition, which took place in Youngwol from November 10 to 13. Jeong Wook-hwa, director of the Korea Gymnasium, expressed gratitude, saying “it was difficult for us to teach the children because there was no qualified coach available at the gym. Mr. Lee, a former Taekwondo competitor, helped the children have great a experience and a fulfilling achievement.”
