KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information), both in name and reality, is playing a central role as the center of science and technology innovation. KISTI has launched the Korea Research Environment Open Network, (KREONET) which provides Grid/e-Science based high-end empowering application services with its global scale high performance network engineering to 250 member organizations of academia and research institutes Through KREONET, members have at their disposal a state-of-the-art DB for R&D activities, a technology information analysis service for value-added knowledge creation, for information dissemination, supercomputing power for extending the horizon of the present state of science and technology. President Cho Young-hwa, Ph.D., the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information is responsible for building a large part of the Korean scientific information infrastructure with computing, networking and information technology. He is one of the pioneers of Korea scientific database system, and has headed KISTI for over 5 years. In a special exclusive interview with The Korea IT Times he points out, "thus, no matter how excellent be your manpower and ideas may be, if there is insufficient computing resources to back high-grade knowledge information and large-scale cutting-edge research, and the high-speed network is not there to be able to maximize research efficiency, it is difficult for us to gain international superiority. He further emphasizes that it is well known that the level of knowledge information is determined by the competitiveness and economic level of society, adding, not least, the significance of knowledge information in science technology R&D is even greater. In the 21st century knowledge-based society in which the level of knowledge information holds sway over national competitiveness, the president said that KISTI is establishing a national science technology knowledge as well as informational infrastructure R&D service system in order for Korea science and technology to claim worldwide ex-cellence. KISTI also is carrying out various research projects to boost the research performance of researchers effectively by constructing super computing infrastructure and high-speed research networks. To learn about its transformation strategy as a leading science/technology knowledge infrastructure construction institution, The Korea IT Times met Cho in his office in Seoul recently.
