The development of new computing and communication devices, and the increased connectivity between them are creating new opportunities for people to carry on socializing, pursuing their business or simply enjoying entertainment regardless of time and space. Ubiquitous computing pushes computational services out of conventional desktop interfaces and puts them into environments characterized by transparent forms of interactivity.
This session looked into the benefits of ubiquitous society and the strategies in realizing a better computational and networking environment. What is the current situation in terms of ubiquitous technology vision and infrastructure
How are corporations dealing with these problems and what efforts are being made to enhance computing pervasiveness and mobility Where is the innovation taking place What are the key trends and forecasts for next generation network market What are some effective business models for telecommunication service providers Is there a first provider's advantage in introducing new services
This session consisted of Lee Yong Kyung, president & CEO, KT Corporation, John P. Giere, Chief Marketing Officer, Lucent Technologies, Mr. Derek Lidow, President and CEO, iSuppli Corporation, and Yoon Chang- Bun, President and CEO, Hanaro Telecom (chair).
Mr. Yoon: Together with digital convergence and new technologies, Korea has created a ubiquitous society capable of computing and information flow at any time and any place. In this session, we will discuss the new technologies required to create a ubiquitous society.
Mr. Lee: The Korean ICT market has grown over the years at a rapid pace. To continuously improve, we need to find new solutions to move forward in the future. Recent trends show that customers are seeking new technologies that offer fun, convenience, health and security. The trend also calls for fundamental changes in infrastructure to develop computing power. The ubiquitous society means the convergence of all technology to create ease of use for all customers. Inter-industry collaboration will be needed to further create growth and new technology development. Another key aspect for the industry is to develop a quality network infrastructure to handle the convergence of all technologies for a ubiquitous society. Future business models must incorporate cooperation between the carriers, venture companies and the vendors. KT vision has developed two business models, the WiBRO network WLAN, to provide seamless broadband access. KT will implement the U-City Project in Busan to create a new city infrastructure of the future. The plan is to provide this type of service in 20 cities by the year 2020. Mr. Giere: The main part of the triangle is an innovator that is trying to develop a cost effective infrastructure. If businesses are to continue prospering, we need to redefine the business model in the future. Global market trends show us many new applications such as cameras, video and voice. All this convergence taking place is moving societies toward a ubiquitous lifestyle of communication experiences.
The industry needs to focus on the deployment of technology and equally on the adoption of technology. Moreover, the industry needs to find a way to leverage these devices to deliver many new applications. The future holds more and more interconnectivity, thus creating a ubiquitous environment. The goal is to provide information when you want it, where you want it and in the form that is required. These days, Lucent and Bell Labs are creating a simplified, seamless, secure, portable, and personal approach for infrastructure development that uses software and not just hardware. The main point is to change the service experience to the customer and integrate and provide quality that can lead to more revenue. Lucent is working with many organizations globally to improve mobile business applications and new services. A few of the new blended services include, united subscriber data, creating a common UI, presence enablement, instant communication, LBS, and multimedia communication. Moving forward, Lucent is evolving from a static network to a more dynamic network that learns and provides high quality service to its customers.
Mr. Lidow: I'm here today to discuss how Korea can increase its role in the global IT market, Customers are spending huge amounts of money in mobile communications and content is the fast growing segment of the communications value chain. In 2005 and forward, the majority of the investment will be in 3G-4G infrastructure. Korean IT infrastructure consistently leads the world and continues to grow. Korea created WiBro and is the first in the world to implement this standard. Samsung and LG hold No. 3 position and No. 5 position in the global mobile handset market. One downside is that there are too many handset models in the market. Korea also needs to develop more intellectual property in this area as handphones account for only a small portion of patent activity. Here are some major facts about the Korean IT industry:
1. Korea has invested heavily in leading edge IT infrastructure and services.
2. Korean demand is too small to drive the standards and infrastructure decisions of other countries.
3. The market shares enjoyed by Korea handsets have risen consistently.
4. Korea's leading edge networks have helped generate successful new content.
5. Korea's creation of valuable IP is still limited.
6. Korean government involvement presents both opportunities and challenges.
A few opportunities that could further increase Korea's global share include:
1. Korea should build all its networks using open, global standards
2. Korea needs to improve the effectiveness of local venture capital and private equity funds.
3. Korea needs also to improve marketing skills and business processes.
Mr. Yoon: Where is the profit opportunity for the future of the industry
Mr. Lidow: It will basically come from services and content. Korea needs to stimulate lots of new ideas to continue growth.
Mr. Giere: For a service provider, the largest amount of revenue comes from roaming. Korea needs to reach out globally to establish new partners to develop its network of services.
Mr. Lee: More convergence of wired and wireless technology need to occur to provide more services. More content creation must take place to provide better services to customers. Customer relations will be very important for KT to succeed in the future.
Mr. Yoon: What ubiquitous technology area is making the most progress Mr. Giere: The ability to provide quality ubiquitous coverage is a challenge for Korea. Korea's strengths are a clear vision, good government support, huge investment, and an educated Korean populace.
The country's main weakness is a small marketplace, thus Korea has to constantly be innovative.
