Asiana Introduces RFID Baggage Tracking System
Asiana Airlines will be the first domestic airline company to introduce an advanced baggage tracking system in the domestic aviation market. The system has been devised to prevent passengers' luggage getting lost en route.
The basis of the tracking system is RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, a breakthrough in remote sensing. The system will be installed starting from July 20 and will become operational in February of next year for 6 domestic airports: Kimpo, Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, Chungju, and Jeju.
The RFID system works by continuously broadcasting wireless signals from electronic tags connected to passengers' baggage. The signals are sent to a main control, which is then able to locate the baggage. To date, baggage has been identified by reading bar codes on labels attached to baggage. With the introduction of the RFID system, baggage with the tags attached can now be automatically identified by antennas located around the baggage hall, so decreasing the risk of loosing baggage within an airport.
Also, passengers are now able to check the location of their baggage through monitors located in the baggage claim area without the hassle of waiting in long lines and staring at the carousel as they wait for their baggage to appear.
Asiana Airlines along with the Korea Airports Association (KAC) will sign a joint contract July 10 to introduce the new system.
The development of the RFID system has been government supported and directed by the KAC, which is now responsible for its distribution. Asiana Airlines handles 200,000 pieces of baggage every month domestically, and 900,000 pieces on its international routes. The airline has a baggage damage rate of only 2 out of every 1,000 items making Asiana Airlines one of the most careful airlines in the world.
