SEOUL, KOREA — The governments of the Republic of Korea and the US State of Michigan have reached agreement on mutual recognition of non-commercial driver’s licenses for both ROK nationals living in Michigan and Michigan residents living in the ROK. The “Arrangement on Mutual Recognition and Exchange of Driver’s Licenses” will be signed on February 14, 2012 (US local time).
The Arrangement will mark the eighth of its kind the ROK has signed with the US. This follows those with Maryland in December 2010; Virginia in March 2011; Washington in May 2011; Massachusetts in August 2011; Texas in September 2011; Florida in October 2011; and Oregon in December 2011. The Arrangement with Michigan will greatly help improve the convenience of ROK nationals staying in or visiting the State of Michigan. Currently, some 24,000 people of ROK descent reside in the state.
The ROK government is continually making efforts for the recognition of ROK-issued driver’s licenses in other US states and in countries where an increasing number of its nationals visit or live.
