SEOUL, KOREA — Two months after the passing of former North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, citizens gathered together in Pyongyang to mark what would have been the 70th birthday of Kim. Mourners brought “kimjongilia” begonias with his picture and sung songs remembering his life and the impact he had on his people. In fact there was a bronze statue unveiled of the former leader with his father that stands 6 meters, his coat blown majestically in the wind and speed as he straddles a horse. North Korean songwriters also prepared songs dedicated to the former North Korean leader, while sculptors chiseled slogans into various landforms commemorating his life and leadership. In fact his birthday is now dubbed "Day of the Shining Star.” The ceremony was not only a memorial for Kim but also a show of support for his son, Kim Jong-un, who is North Korea’s current leader. As onlookers peered down the street, posters and banners honoring the Day of the Shining Star illuminated the streets and windows of Pyongyang.

On Tuesday, North Korea's ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong Nam, praised Kim for "turning our country into an invincible one that can never be defeated and has a nuclear deterrent."  Though Kim Jong Un had a quiet disposition during his father’s reign he proudly declared himself as North Korea’s new leader and currently visits military bases. He shares his father’s tactic as a “military first” type of leadership.

Leaders of the Workers' Party stated that Kim Jong-il’s body would lay at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang. His father, North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, currently lies there alongside his son.
