Kookmin University's UIT design specialization project will serve as a momentum to boost its future design competitiveness to international levels and to lead interdisciplinary design education as well as research by grafting the discipline of design onto engineering and management.
This project provides an opportunity to plan, embody, verify and promote diverse educational programs to nurture professional designers who can function in an Ubiquitous environment. As for its ripple effect in the education field, this project's special features as education program are: interdisciplinary integration, educationalindustrial cooperation, and open-model education. Prof. Chung do-sung (Department of Industrial Design) responsible for the UIT design specialization project at Kookmin University says that a variety of educational, research and educational-industrial cooperation programs, which are newly created under this project, will play a role in presenting a leading model to nurture competitive, professional designers. In terms of educational-industrial ripple effect, companies with capacity in areas such as design, engineering and management will become leading corporations in the new Ubiquitous environment. Kookmin University's UIT design specialization project is expected to offer an opportunity to enhance the design competitiveness of industry by providing programs to nurture UIT-oriented designers in these 3 areas. This project is equipped with programs that can contribute to the educational, industrial, and cultural development of local communities and share through diverse local community cooperative programs. Nurturing UIT designers to international levels The authorities of Kookmin University say that the educational system by UIT design specialization is expected to serve as an engine of international specialization by developing a unique Korean brand of design, and nurturing local designers to the position of international recognition. Regarding the background to the specialization plan and its direction, Prof. Chung says that Kookmin University wants to nurture UIT designers of international level by developing/UIT design education programs to fuse design, engineering and management by means of a UIT design college establishment in 2007. For this purpose, the University is scheduled to make progress in its specialization project systematically over the next four years in the areas of UIT design education, research, support as well as infrastructure. As to system improvement efforts in the interests of creative talent selection, Kookmin University has introduced an entrance examination screening, called 'Idea and Expression' to assess creativity and expression levels for the first time in Korea by testing candidates in areas such as color composition. As a prelude to introducing a new entrance examination system, Kookmin University has been holding a 'Design Contest' for high school students as well as graduates nationwide since 2000 to discover or to nurture talent with creative ability in order to cope proactively with the rapidly changing education environment in the 21st century. The University's talent recruitment system breaks down into advanced university benchmarking, early educational program (1+4) development and a study to improve the UIT designer selection system. With its efforts to construct an UIT design system by stages, Kookmin University is securing cutting-edge design educational facilities based on new Ubiquitous technology, in which the academic world as well as industrial circles related to design are showing great interest. An official at the University says that Kookmin University is fleshing out the practical education in UIT in step with the specific character of the design field. The University offers 2 practice rooms, one at 2,115.56m2 and the other measuring 5,942.91m2 where students can hone their expertise. Kookmin University's UIT design educational support facilities are certainly worthy of notice. Advanced University Benchmarking First, its UIT Design Education Development Institute, which was established as part of the specialization plan in 2005, involves substantial educationalindustrial cooperation plus UIT design research and education through the use of associated facilities and plays a pivotal hub role domestically by functioning as a cultural space of the local community. Second, the 01 Design Center, which located in Dongsung-dong, Jongro-district, Seoul with seven floors above ground and two below ground, is boosting the Center's research performance capability by carrying out novel educational projects and commercial design activities. Third, the Alias Authorized Training Center now houses the 'AliasTools Training Center', an indispensable design tool for next-generation Korean designers and is taking the initiative in formulating education in this advanced design system by opening the Center to other colleges and universities plus the industrial world. Fourthly, Kookmin University has set up an UIT design management lecture program as well as computer practice room that features a Ubiquitous-based u- Learning education environment that was built at a cost of 200 million won. This UIT Design Management Education Hall feautures an Ubiquitous environment plus a Rear LCD Projection system, Location pursuit camera for a lecturer, real-time lecture storage system, digital stereophonic sound system, Internet remote integration control system, and wireless networkbased computer practice support equipment. Last but not least, Kookmin University plays a leading role in offering designassociated information by operating Korea's largest library in the field of design.
