SEOUL, KOREA and HANOI, VIETNAM - Vietnam and South Korea will discuss the possibility of building a nuclear power plant in Vietnam, South Korean ambassador to Vietnam Ha Chan Ho told a press briefing in Hanoi.

Officials of the two nations will meet over the plan when Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attends the second Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul late this month. However, it is too soon to talk about the investment scale and location of the plant, the ambassador said.

This is also part of bilateral talks between high officials of the two countries on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties, December 22.

Some 58 senior officials from 53 countries and four international organizations are expected to attend the summit on March 26-27.

After attending the first summit in Washington DC last year, Vietnam will participate in the second summit as an active member in international efforts for nuclear security enhancement, Ha said.

Russia will build Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant and lend Vietnam USD 8 billion to implement the project in the central coast province of Ninh Thuan. The Ninh Thuan 1 facility is planned to start power generation in 2020.

Meanwhile, Japan is studying the second nuclear power plant in the same province, Ninh Thuan 2.

Under the nuclear power development plan until 2030, Vietnam will build facilities in eight locations in the central region.
