WHITIERIA, NEW ZEALAND — Whitireia New Zealand has been chosen by the Korean Government to offer tertiary training in hospitality and tourism, to Korean scholarship students. The Korean Government is providing scholarships for students to study hospitality and tourism in New Zealand. Successful students are required to gain overseas work experience as part of these scholarships, and on completion, return to Korea and work in the tourism and/or hospitality industry.

Whitireia has been approved by the Korean Government for this training scholarship initiative, the only tertiary training institute in New Zealand to be selected. It is expected that eventually up to 40 students a year will gain scholarships through this initiative to study here. The students will have a Korean tertiary education qualification, and be 20 years of age or over. Training will consist of theory and practical study. As well, students will undertake a formal work experience period as part of their course. Students will study for a minimum of 20 hours each week. Whitireia will organize appropriate work placements for the students, in hospitality and tourism related fields, within the Wellington region.

English Language study will be completed by the students, for four weeks before commencing their formal tourism study. Both of these programs will be offered by Whitireia, from the Porirua campus. This is a very exciting venture for Whitireia said Helen Gardiner, Dean, Faculty of Service Industries. “We are looking forward to working with the Korean Government and the scholarship students” she said. “Whitireia and the Wellington hospitality and tourism industry have a lot to offer and showcase to these students”.

The first 20 scholarship students are due to arrive in Porirua on the 18 June 2012. They will commence their English Language course and then start their formal hospitality and tourism training on 16 July 2012.
