SEOUL, KOREA — First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Sung-han delivered an address at the breakfast for the participants of the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Symposium in Seoul on March 23.
In his address, Vice Minister Kim highlighted the importance of the Nuclear Security Summit as an occasion for world leaders to show their collective commitment toward stronger nuclear security. The Vice Minister also emphasized the need for nuclear security experts to contribute to making progress in the field and requested their active participation.
With regard to the announced plan of North Korea to launch an alleged “application satellite,” Vice Minister Kim pointed out that the launch, if proceeded, will constitute a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1874.
The Symposium, hosted by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control, brought together experts from the world’s leading nuclear security organizations to listen to their suggestions on ways to strengthen nuclear security, ahead of the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit scheduled for March 26-27.
The Symposium was attended by some 270 experts from international organizations, think tanks and regulatory bodies related with nuclear security, including the IAEA, INTERPOL and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
