DARMSTADT, GERMANY– As a leading manufacturer of cosmetic ingredients, Merck will be exhibiting at in-cosmetics, the international personal care ingredients trade show, in Barcelona, Spain, from April 17 to 19. Merck will be presenting seven new effect pigments, two innovative functional fillers as well as exciting application kits with products and formulation suggestions for customers. The spotlight will also be on concepts for the dermocosmetics sector and effective combinations of sun and insect protection.

 Creating special accents

Seven new effect pigments are accenting color and skin care cosmetics. What’s their secret A high purity of stronger color effects provided by their synthetic mica substrate with low heavy metal content. The pigments are suitable for the sensitive lip and eye areas.

Timiron® SynWhite Satin refines cosmetic formulations by imparting to them an attractive silver shine. White and transparent products obtain a fresher appearance; colored formulations are given a subtle, silvery shimmer. The pigment is universally applicable, provides shine, high covering power and a soft skin feel.

The five interference pigments Timiron® SynBeam (Gold, Copper, Red, Blue, and Violet) increase the color intensity and brilliance of a formulation and impart soft color effects without changing the base color. Optical effects on the skin are also possible: golden and copper-colored shades create a radiant complexion; red interference effects give a natural freshness; blue or violet effects show darker areas of the skin to more advantage.

Colorona® SynRussian Gold immerses cosmetic formulations in a rich, intense golden color hue. The gold-yellow powder achieves amazing pearl effects even at lower application concentrations and produces convincing effects in transparent formulations.

In summer 2012, Merck will be launching the effect pigment Ronastar® Diamond Black, a unique lustrous very dark pigment. This innovative cosmetic pigment gives products such as eyeliners, eye shadows and nail polish a glamorous, incomparable shine and offers impressive covering power. When used in mascara, Ronastar® Diamond Black, which is based on aluminum oxide, makes eyes radiate.

 Creating softer, richer textures

The new functional filler RonaFlair® SynMica M gives cosmetic formulations both a richer and smoother texture as well as optimum wear properties. Thanks to its platelet structure, it improves the application and spreadability of compact powders. With this filler, Merck is also relying on synthetic mica, a pure substrate with high transparency, a pure-white powder color and low heavy metal content.

RonaFlair® LDP White is transparent functional filler which provides immediate and quantitatively proven soft focus effects. It consists of white ceramic microspheres that fill wrinkles and unevenness, immediately giving the skin a smoother and more even appearance. The result Optical anti-aging effects and an attractive porcelain complexion.

 Providing customers with inspiration

Customer centricity has always been the focus at Merck. The company sees itself not only as a supplier of raw materials, but also as a competent partner capable of supporting cosmetic manufacturers along their entire process chain – from developing innovative formulations to successfully marketing the finished products. To inspire its customers, Merck is presenting innovative application kits with products and formulation suggestions at the in-cosmetics 2012. These kits include specific products with future-oriented formulations for both color and personal care cosmetics. In this way, Merck is proving yet again that it thinks ahead when it comes to the development of cosmetic ingredients. What are the trends of the future What cosmetic products do consumers want For example, the “No Surgery Kit” proposes non-invasive ways of obtaining perfect skin. And the “Travel Kit” proves that protection from sunlight and insects can be effectively combined.

Cosmetic manufacturers can also look forward to finding out more about the role of the active ingredient RonaCare® AP in acne prevention. And effective sun protection is a good way to ward off premature aging. With the full range of UV-TITAN and Eusolex® UV filters, the trend toward lightweight formulations for sensitive skin with high sun protection factors can easily be met.

Interested cosmetic companies can find out more about the innovations from Merck at in-cosmetics 2012 in Barcelona (Stand K16) from April 17 to 19 or directly from their Merck sales force representative.
