Furthermore, Incheon also combines logistical support for the Cheolla and Chungcheong provinces.

IFEZ connects China with some 350 million consumers that have a per capita income of over USD 30,000 and the economic power of Japan. Meanwhile, the Songdo Free Economic Zone, a center of transportation and an environment-friendly city, will become a center for the world’s bio- industry as it succeeded in attracting Celltrion, a company that boasts that the world’s second largest bio is similar to the production facility. The world’s bio similar market volume is expected to reach 60 trillion won in 2015.

To create a cluster of high-tech industries, Incheon City will go all-out to attract Samsung, Dong-A Pharmaceutical companies, venture companies and international research and educational institutions. Q : Early this year, Incheon City suggested the expansion of investment and education as its vision for sustainable growth. Would you comment on the city’s future task

A : Incheon City’s core goals for this year are the creation of jobs through attracting investment and talents through education and welfare. Job creation is the core of any economic structure. We will create more jobs by attracting large and promising mid-tier companies as well as competitive small and medium-sized firms.

In addition, we will make efforts to expand new growth engines through economic free zone projects, airport and harbor projects and, develop western islands. We will drastically improve the city’s education by starting the Songdo Global Campus and establishing a new international school, while attracting a number of talents from other provinces and foreign countries, including China, Japan and Southeast Asian countries.

Q : World renowned economists stress that the national growth engine depends on the use of ocean resources. Would you introduce Incheon City’s vision to develop the area’s marine resources

A : The Incheon coast is one of the world’s top five mud flats. We need to develop the city’s marine industry by properly using the mud flats and surrounding sea. The fishery sector is changing from a fish-catching primary industry to a secondary and tertiary industry due to the process of marine products, and improvement of distribution channels.

We also plan to develop a marine general tourist estate by utilizing the sea and various ocean leisure tour programs. In addition, Incheon City is moving to develop the well-being green industry using seaweeds and launch the ocean’s bio energy research & development project as a means of creating value added chains and expanding the income of the city’s fishing workers.
