DEAJEON, KOREA — A special educational exhibit on Dokdo opened at the National Science Museum in Daejeon on February 3, the first of four that will take place this year throughout the country.
Organized by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, “Island of the First Sunrise: the Story Told by Dokdo” gives visitors the opportunity to examine firsthand a variety of research materials on the islets. The exhibit also displays specimens of the diverse animals and plants that can be found on Dokdo, with a special aquarium showcasing the various kinds of fish that live in nearby waters.
The walk through the exhibit leads visitors across an enlarged map of the region, and includes a stop at a 3D booth that recreates the sights around Dokdo and below in the surrounding ocean. Live video footage of Dokdo will also be broadcast throughout the exhibit’s duration. The exhibit will run until May 20, after which it will visit Jeju, Yeosu, and Daegu for a nationwide tour that will end on December 9.
“We hope that the opportunity to interact directly with the sights and sounds of Dokdo will leave visitors feeling closer to Dokdo in their hearts,” said a spokesperson for the Northeast Asian History Foundation.
