
SEOUL, KOREA – SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) today won the ‘Best Mobile Carrier’ category award from Telecom Asia. The prestigious industry award recognized SK Telecom for its innovation in product portfolio and business models while consolidating its market and technology leadership in the Asian region.
Han Nam-Seuk, Senior Vice President of Information Technology R&D Center, received the award for the company at the 15th annual Telecom Asia Awards ceremony in Bangkok.
“I want to congratulate SK Telecom on winning Best Mobile Carrier Award,” said Telecom Asia group editor Joseph Waring. “The panel of judges was impressed by SK Telecom’s strategy to move quickly to LTE and introduce innovative pricing schemes. The company has also strengthened its market leadership across Asia by building a stable data service environment through innovations in data offload, which includes the development of what SK Telecom calls the ‘Hybrid Network’ and LTE femtocells,” he added.
SK Telecom commercialized LTE service for the first time in Korea and marked 1 million subscribers within seven months since the launch. With its stable service offering and diverse pricing schemes including T Freemium which provides free multimedia contents such as movies, music, TV shows, and games, LTE subscribers of the company surpassed 2 million, as of April 17. Earlier, SK Telecom also participated in Telco Strategies 2012, an industry conference also organized by Telecom Asia, where the company discussed analyzing customer data usage patterns and predicting their needs to provide optimal data service environment. SK Telecom also introduced its efforts to develop innovative network solutions for data offload.
The Telecom Asia Awards are the most prestigious honors in Asian telecommunications and have been presented annually since 1998. The winners were judged on their financial, market and technology strengths based on financial analysis and assessments by a 15-member judging panel.
