YEOSU, KOREA — The unknown world at 6,500m below the surface of the sea comes ashore. Findings of some of the most advanced research under the sea, are gathered at the OCBPA (Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area) designed to cater to students. The Organizing Committee of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea (Chairman Kang Dong-suk) announced that they will hold a conference for OCBPA on the 25th, about 10 days before the opening of the event.

OCBPA introduces secrets of the ocean discovered by scientists around the world with the 13 best practices (of 14 institutions) relating to science technology and policy from selected global regions.

Upon entering the observation area of the OCBPA, visitors will first be greeted by GOOS (Global Ocean Observing System) and POGO (Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans) programs and see how the ocean is researched.

The actual Shinkai 6500 will be exhibited at the expo

GOOS not only exhibits actual devices used for observation but visitors can also enjoy watching observation device models float on the water on the wall screen. The main purpose of these exhibits is to help people understand how to predict the weather and oil spills by using the information collected from the ocean observation.

Meanwhile, JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) gives onlookers the opportunity to view the Shinkai 6500, a manned submersible survey vehicle from Japan that actually explored the deep sea 6,500m below the sea, through the sliding vision. The large diorama takes spectators into the life of deep sea organisms that learned how to survive in extreme environments in their own unique way.

In addition, on May 16, during the RCI (Royal Caribbean International) week, the Legend will arrive in the Cruise Terminal of the expo. Twenty people who visit the expo that day will be selected to board and enjoy a meal on the ship: you can test your luck on the official OCBPA blog (blog.naver.com/ocbpa).

“OCBPA is a top-class exhibition hall that displays only the best of present ocean-related research and projects,” says Kang Hyun-joo, the director of OCBPA. She adds, “It is not simply an exhibition; many young students will be able to picture their future through the ocean teeming with mystery and life.”

Before the opening on May 12th, you can find out more about the exhibition and programs of OCBPA on the official blog (blog.naver.com/ocbpa), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ocbpa) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/ocbpa).
