SEOUL, KOREA — SK Telecom (SKT, NYSE:SKM) announced today that it will showcase a wide variety of services powered by next-generation LTE technology and other information and communication technologies (ICT) at World IT Show 2012 (WIS 2012), to be held from May 15 to 18 at COEX, Seoul, Korea.

For the first time in Korea, SK Telecom will demonstrate LTE Multi-Carrier (MC) and Carrier Aggregation (CA), technologies that maximize the efficiency of frequency resource usage by utilizing two different frequency bands; LTE Femto, a technology that minimizes shadow areas; and Hybrid Network solution that allows for simultaneous use of two different types of networks to offer up to 100Mbps download speeds.

Hybrid Network made the first public appearance at Mobile World Congress 2012 held in Barcelona in February, attracting great interest from major global mobile carriers. As for LTE Femto, the company completed the development in the end of 2011 for the first time in the world, and plans to commercialize it in June 2012.

Moreover, ground-breaking enterprise solutions based on Big Data and Cloud (IaaS, SaaS), Smart Robot, Wi-Fi broadcasting technology and many other services developed by combining ICT with people’s daily lives will be on display to show how ICT including SK Telecom’s network, SK Planet’s platform and SK Hynix’s semiconductor technology is breaking down barriers between industries to create innovations and new value for customers.

Cutting-Edge LTE Technologies

At this year’s WIS, SK Telecom will demonstrate LTE Multi-Carrier (MC) that uses both 800MHz and 1.8GHz frequency bands by adopting the technology to its LTE networks on a trial basis for the first time in Korea. LTE MC realizes an optimal quality of service by considering the level of data traffic congestion in the area of user location and choosing a less congested frequency band. SK Telecom is planning to commercialize the technology within the third quarter of 2012 after performing field tests. The company will also introduce LTE Carrier Aggregation (CA), a sophisticated LTE technology that allows integrated use of its network resources – i.e. 800MHz and 1.8GHz frequency bands – and aims to commercialize the technology in 2013. With the adoption of LTE CA to its LTE networks, SK Telecom expects to provide two times faster network speed.

Hybrid Network solution, developed in response to surging data traffic, will also be on exhibit for the first time in Korea. SK Telecom has already completed the development of the solution for integrated use of ‘3G and Wi-Fi’ in January 2012. The company is currently in the process of optimizing Hybrid Network to launch commercial service, which will enable customers to experience services with greater speed and stability.

Furthermore, SK Telecom will showcase its homegrown LTE service quality enhancing solutions like LTE Femto and interference management technology for LTE networks, developed as part of its multifaceted efforts to ensure a stable, quality service for customers by preventing call disconnections in base station boundary areas and indoors.

Leading Big Data/ Cloud Solutions for Enterprises

SK Telecom will display its representative Big Data/ Cloud solutions developed in line with its B2B Cloud-related strategy established in April 2012. The strategy includes offering solutions optimized for mobile; ensuring the world’s top level of security and stability; and providing cloud solutions in response to Big Data.

The company will demonstrate popular Big Data related services such as Smart Insight and Geovision. Smart Insight is an enterprise social analysis platform applied with SK Telecom’s differentiated unstructured data analyzing technologies like text mining and natural language process technology. It is rapidly gaining popularity in various industries including beauty, fashion and leisure as it offers insightful information - based on analyses of online public opinion (SNS, blog, news, etc.) - that can be utilized in corporate PR, marketing and CRM activities.

Geovision is a business platform that provides services like customer management, marketing support and market analysis. SK Telecom, together with diverse partners including credit card firm and real estate company, is actively offering analysis of floating population (age/ gender/ time/ industry), purchasing patterns, local area information and real estate-related information of a certain trading area to help its corporate customers succeed in their businesses.

Moreover, SK Telecom will exhibit its enterprise cloud solutions in the forms of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The company will be demonstrating diverse cloud services that help increase corporate efficiency including IaaS solutions like Easy Storage and Cloud Server and SaaS solutions such as T Biz Groupware, Cloud SAP B1, Cloud App, and FTA Insight (Origin management service).

ICT brought into Customers’ Daily Lives

Smart Robot, an interactive education service for children the company developed by combining a smartphone and a robot, will be displayed at WIS 2012. Unlike existing educational robots, it uses smartphone as its brain, allowing customers to easily use the service by attaching the smartphone to the robot and access applications downloaded to smartphones, thereby removing the need for them to subscribe to a separate service or line.

SK Telecom will also demonstrate broadcasting service using Wi-Fi network to the public. Wi-Fi based broadcasting technology offers high-speed, stable multimedia broadcasting service even in the environment where many access points generate interference, and flawless streaming service regardless of the number of subscribers. Visitors can gain first-hand experience of the service by downloading the application and accessing Wi-Fi.

New Value Created through Openness and Convergence

SK Telecom will be participating in this year’s WIS jointly with SK Planet and SK Hynix to display their commitment to becoming a true partner for new possibilities in the ICT industry.

SK Planet will be displaying platform services like Smart Wallet, T Store, TicToc, NFC services, and smartphone-based remote control solutions (Remote UI: Enables the use of T Map, Melon, etc., by wirelessly connecting the smartphone screen to the in-vehicle device) that can be utilized not only by telecos but also companies of diverse fields. SK Planet expects to show how its diverse platform business can contribute to expanding the overall ICT market and increasing customer value.

SK Hynix will exhibit a range of memory chips – e.g. mobile memory, NAND flash, server memory, cloud memory, CIS, etc. - installed in mobile devices used in people’s daily lives such as smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and data center servers so as to explain how these chips help enhance performance and efficiency of the devices.

The three companies plan to show how world class networks operated by SK Telecom, diverse platform developed and run by SK Planet, devices embedded with memory chips made by SK Hybix are combined to enrich customers’ lives.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom has chosen『Carnival』as the main concept of WIS 2012, under which it organized various demonstrations to enable visitors to experience first-hand and easily understand how ICT is blended into our daily lives.
