SEOUL, KOREA — One of largest mobile carriers in Korea, KT (Korea Telecom) fell victim to hackers who have tapped its customers' personal data for 5 months starting Februay this year. In the leak case of 8 million people's names, social identification numbers, contact details, etc., nearly half of KT's all 16 million registered profiles, the Cyber Terrorism Response Center at the National Police Agency on 29 arrested two suspects for allegedly having sold the stolen information to telemarketing agencies.
Mr. Choi and his accomplices developed a hacking program designed specifically for KT, believing the mobile corporate is paying such telemarketing firms more in compensation for sales. The ill-intent program could successfully withdraw all key data by assuming as one of KT's sales affiliates. By practicing the mockery, they have illegally earned 1.01 billion won.
Following the accident, KT released an apologetic statement,"Taking on this weighing issue, we plan to overhaul the sales system ahead of schedule as a preventive measure."
