The Ministry of Science and Technology recently said that it plans to map out a draft of the law to promote development of nuclear fusion energy by the end of March as a follow-up step of the national nuclear fusion energy basic plan fixed at the 19th state science technology committee on Dec. 13 last year. The ministry also plans to submit the draft to the extraordinary National Assembly to be held in June-July.
It is designed to prepare an institutional basis to participate in the 500 MW-class International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) construction project, which will cost about $5 billion until 2015. Under the project, the government will invest 309 billion won for development, manufacture and setup of Korea-type nextgeneration nuclear fusion study equipment between 1995 and 2007, a ministry spokesman said.
During the period from 2004 to 2015, it will also pour 860 billion won into projects related to the ITER joint development.
