Starting from March 2, KT launched the high-speed Internet-on-the-move services in the Seoul metropolitan area for the first time in the world. KT, the country's predominant fixedline telecom carrier, said it launched the pilot WiBro services with about 200 employees.
KT deployed WiBro trial runs on a phased basis before starting the commercial services in early June, a KT spokesman said. During the first stage, our 200 staff will try it out this month. During the second feasibility test during April and May, about 3,000 citizens will take part in the event, he added. During the month-long first-phase test, a WiBro connection will be enabled at Sinchon, Gangnamgu, Socho-gu and Songpa-gu in Seoul and at Bundang in Gyeonggi Province. Included in the first service area were a section of Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan) Highway and a subway line from Sollung station in southern Seoul to Ori station in Bundang, the spokesman said. WiBro, short for wireless broadband, enables people on the road to be connected to the Internet through handheld gadgets like personal digital assistance (PDA) or notebooks.
