SEOUL KOREA – Naver’s Project BiO(Better is Original)
Since 2006, Naver has followed through with Project BiO(Better is Original)that is designed to modify the rankings of pages in the search results by filtering out scrapped postings and quasi-original contents.
This is how Project BiO works: it compares the similarities between online documents returned by Naver search service and measures each document’s originality in order to give original documents the top spots of the search results list. In other words, a posting’s originality score increases depending on when it was written and how frequently it was scrapped or copied.

Since the end of October, Project BiO has toughen edits approach towards news contents on the grounds that the standards for copyrights on news reports are clear-cut compared to other contents. Thus, Naver has recalibrated its search services to give priority to a collection of news coverage on SERPs when the intention behind a user’s search queries is understood as searches for relevant news articles. For instance, if a user enters “toxic gas leakage disaster in Gumi” in the search box, news results appear higher than other son SERPs. Before the introduction of this service, scrapped news contents on blogs and snippets from on line community websites could precede original news articles.
Naver aims to create a virtuous cycle in the Internet usage environment via Project BiO. Therefore,Project BiO, geared to holding blog scrapping in check and expediting R&D activities, will continuously promote the distribution of original, creative contents, thereby encouraging content creation and providing users with access to a wider range of quality contents.
Naver Plans to Run a Search Results Coordination Center
As part of efforts to expand Project BiO, Naver plans to set up a search results coordination center as early as the end of 2012. The center will allow users to check whether their postings are properly retrieved by Naver search engine and to request corrections if their original postings are classified as similar documents. Besides, users also can report to the center the unauthorized copying and reuse of their listing data and demand that such data be removed from search results. By doing so, Naver looks to bolster it communication with users.
Introduction of Naver Trends
Naver Trends is a service that shows the statistics of search terms on Naver, which is frequented by about 18 million online users a day. By using Never Trends, users can identify the periodical trends of information retrieval on Naver.
Naver Trends shows how often a particular search term is entered over time relative to the total number of searches in a graph. Also, Naver Trends allows users to compare the search volumes of as many as five keywords and displays links to news articles related to the top 7 peaks in the graph.
While Google Trends discloses regional search trends and fluctuations over time, Naver Trends separates the trends of PC-based searches from those of mobile searches so as to factor in an upsurge in mobile traffic. Besides, since Naver is one of Korea’s most popular search engines, Naver Trends is expected to serve as a significant tool to grasp the trends of search queries in Korea.
Naver Trends Reflects the Degree of Interest, Not Popularity.
Naver Trends shows the degree of public interest, not popularity of a certain search term. For example, once you type in “girl group” in Naver Trends, a graph will show up indicating that the number of searches for Korean idol groups“Kara” and “T-ara” was higher during specific time periods than that for the most popular Korean girl group “Girls’ Generation.” As such, Naver Trends shows how intensively a particular search term received the public’s attention rather than its popularity.
