An exciting new era in which six movies can be stored simultaneously in a mobile phone has been launched by Samsung. On April 19, Samsung Electronics announced that it had developed a 2GB MMC Micro, which is of the biggest capacities in the world for a memory card for mobile phones and that it will begin mass producing in earnest in the second half of the year. This product has loaded onto it four 4GB Nand Flashes which have been produced by applying the highest technology 60 nano manufacturing process. It is of the biggest capacity among those used for being loaded onto mobile phones. The 'MMC Micro' is a kind of a multimedia card (MMC) that has earned its fame as a memory card for storing information. It is a super-small memory card for use with next-generation mobile phones. It is 1/4 the size of standard MMC's. Having the size of a fingernail, the 2GB product can store large amounts of data, including 1000 5 million pixel-class digital photographs, 6 high image quality movies of the QVGA class, 500 MP3 songs, and others. Especially, it possesses diverse special features that are indispensable to mobile devices, including the data transmission speed (Writing speed: 7.12MB/s) that is over three times faster than other memory cards of the same size, low electricity consumption of the level of 1/6, dual voltages at 1.8 v and 3.3 v, and others. Samsung Electronics has been mass-producing MMC Micros of diverse capacities from 32 MB to 512 MB. In the latter half of this year, it plans to begin mass-producing, in earnest, 1 GB and 2 GB products it has succeeded in developing in the beginning of this year. An executive at Samsung Electronics said, 'The MMC is an international standard memory card standardized by the Multimedia Card Association (MMCA) so that anyone can make it without having to pay royalty or having a license. In March this year, the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), which is a semiconductor standard association of the world, and MMCA jointly took part in standard establishment. Thereby, it is predicted that the MMC market will continue to grow in the future.'
