Frequentis shows how with its customized communication and information systems
On the occasion of the Korea-Austria Automation Day, the Korea IT Times conducted the following interview with Wolfgang Slawinski, CEO of Frequentis GmbH in Korea...Ed.
Q: Please tell us about Frequentis GmbH's business activities in Korea and its future outlook
Frequentis started its business activities here in Korea in 1996 by participating in the bid for the new Incheon International Airport communication system and Air Traffic Control Center. Both projects were won and perfectly completed together with Korean partners like Samsung SDS and others. Since that time Frequentis systems have become well-known in Korea for reliability, safety and operational concepts. The Frequentis system at Incheon Airport, which will be extended shortly, and the Jeju Airport that was installed in 2003 are perfect references for the reliability of the system and will be extended to serve as a Backup system of the Air Traffic Control Center installed by Frequentis in 1998 in Seoul. Frequentis vision of future communication and information systems stimulates the whole range of activities where safety is of supreme importance. The systems are known for their state-ofthe- art technology and reliability. Tailor-made and with excellent usability, they turn customer requirements into customer satisfaction. Frequentis products are characterised by high fail-safety, rapid establishment of connections, as well as flexibility and networking capabilities in application, which will remain and be improved. Frequentis is committed to the Korean market together with its Korean partners.
Q: What is Frequentis GmbH business strategy to expand business in Korea
There are three areas where we like to expand our activities here in Korea: the first is Public Safety, secondly the Military and third Transportation.
There have been extremely positive developments in the field of Public Safety and Transport over the years. Frequentis has won several international projects like the Vienna public transport authority and the Red Cross. In Austria and in Germany were major projects for the Hamburg and Berlin Fire Brigades and the Hamburg Police Operations Center were realized. There have been projects in the maritime sector - in Denmark and Norway, the company demonstrated a high degree of innovation and courage by branching out into TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) technology, which at the time was largely unknown. Our business strategy is to approach this market segment in Korea, as there are several projects in this area like the NEMA Project, the Railway communication and the military area were Frequentis can provide communication centers an TETRA communication systems. Because of Frequentis experience combined Radio and Telephone communication with integrated data are the future for Command control Centers as shown in the London Police Center.
In parallel with voice communication, the role of data editing for the purposes of decision-making is becoming ever more significant.
At this first Korean-Austrian Automation Day in Changwon we are presenting our new business area for Video Severance of Remote areas and Real Time Traffic Analyses detection of Moving and Fixed Objects. Frequentis is providing special CCTV functions for the London Police and for other specific Projects.
During 2003, a highly satisfactory breakthrough was achieved in the rail market as regards new GSM-R technology (Global System for Mobile Communications-Rail, the new European radio standard for railways). As the partner of Nortel Networks, FREQUENTIS agreed to deliver dispatcher workstations to Deutsche Bahn (DB). The first follow-up order was received early in November: Around 4,000 dispatcher stations need to be equipped at DB.
High-profile orders for GSM-R fixed terminal systems (comprising dispatchers, ground switching centres and remote switches with wide-ranging functionality) were received from Finland (partner: Siemens Finland), Great Britain (customer: Network Rail) and from Switzerland.
Q: How high is the automation level in your company at the moment
Our company is especially concerned with optimising the working environment. The department responsible for research and development on the man/machine interface is aiming to adapt this around the specific needs of user target groups. This will provide decision-making support within a work situation that is often stressful.
Q: How do you think regarding automation collaboration between Korea and Austria companies
The collaboration regarding automation between Austria and Korea is just beginning. Austrian companies and organizations realize the potential of Korea institutions and companies. Some companies like the company AT&S who formed a JV with a Korean Company for manufacturing top quality PCBs and B&R who is particular working for years in the field of Automation here in Korea are priorities and this Automatization Day should support this idea of collaboration between the two countries. It has to be seen as a platform of discussion and extending the existing ties between the University of Technology in Vienna and Korean Universities or organizations. As Austria is a member of the European Union it is possible for participation within the Framework program for research and development of the EU, the so-called FP6 or FP7. For participation, partners are necessary and Korean companies and organizations can participate. A foundation is provided for the European part by the EU and for the Korean part by the Korean government is under way.
Q: In which areas would Frequentis GmbH like to cooperate with Korean counterparts
The most essential feature of a company's entry into new markets is a high level of innovation and creativity. Frequentis products and services stand out because of their advanced technological state, a fact that is impressively underscored by the number of global awards it has received. But an even more impressive testimony is the confidence displayed in Frequentis by customers and partners. Therefore we are very pleased to cooperate with our Korean partners to realize the requested requirements and to create new functions and new systems not only for the Korean market.
