SEOUL, KOREA - Kia Motors is going all-out to increase the brand awareness of its K Series and plans to release its new K7 and K3 in the United States within this year.
The company announced on January 16 that it will launch the sales of the New K7 in the U.S. from the second quarter of this year. The New K7 will be released with a name of Cadenza there. The New K7 was released in Korea in late 2012. Kia Motors showed off the New K7 at the Detroit Motor Show, which opened on January 14.
Kia Motors also plans to start selling K3 (dubbed as Forte in the U.S. market) from the second quarter. K3 made its debut at the LA Motor Show in November 2012. These models will be produced at Kia Motors’ Hwaseong factory and shipped to the U.S.
Kia Motors sold 550,000 units in the US last year, up 15 percent from a year ago. It was the first time for Kia Motors to pass the 500,000 mark in annual sales in the U.S. market. Three Kia models each were sold more than 100,000 units in 2012 there. They consist of K5 (152,399), Sorento (119,597) and Soul (102,267).

기아차, "신형 'K7·K3' 투입해 美시장 공략"
베스트셀링카 'K5' 효과 기대···K9도 하반기 출시
기아자동차가 올해 미국 시장에 신형 K7과 K3를 출시하고 K시리즈 알리기에 적극 나선다. 지난해 베스트셀링카 K5의 판매 호조에 힘입어 '기아 K시리즈'의 브랜드 상승 효과마저 노리고 있다.
16일 기아차에 따르면 지난해 말 국내 출시된 '더 뉴 K7'(미국명 카덴자)은 올 2분기 미국 판매에 들어간다. 이를 위해 기아차는 14일 개막한 '디트로이트 모터쇼'에 신차를 출품하고 현지시장의 반응 점검에 나섰다.
또 작년 11월 미국 LA모터쇼에서 첫 공개한 K3(미국명 포르테)도 2분기 판매를 개시한다. 두 차종 모두 기아차 화성공장에서 생산돼 미국으로 수출된다. 회사측은 두 차종이 출시 2년 만에 판매 1위 모델이 된 'K5(미국명 옵티마)'의 성공을 이어갈 것으로 기대했다.
기아차는 지난해 미 시장에서 전년 대비 15% 증가한 55만여대를 팔았다. 미 진출 후 처음으로 50만대 이상 판매하는 실적을 올렸다. 판매 차종 중에선 K5(15만2399대), 쏘렌토(11만9597대), 쏘울(10만2267대) 3개 모델이 10만대 이상 팔렸다.
K7는 지난해 페이스리프트(부분변경) 모델이 나오면서 전면부 그릴 모양을 K9과 닮은 스타일로 교체했다. 이 때문에 K7보다 차급이 높은 K9의 시장 반응을 미리 확인해 볼 수 있는 기회로 활용한다는 방침이다.
기아차 관계자는 "신형 K7는 북미 시장에서 프리미엄 자동차 브랜드 이미지를 구축하기 위한 시험무대"라고 말했다.
기아차는 K7 출시 이후 K9도 하반기 투입할 계획이다. 현재 K9은 중동과 동유럽 일부 국가에 수출되고 있다.
