LG Electronics regained the No. 2 spot in the North American mobile phone market in about a year.
According to a Hong Kong-based market research firm Counterpoint Research, LG Electronics grabbed a share of 13 percent in the North American mobile phone market in December 2012. LG Electronics accordingly ranked No. 2 there on a monthly basis, beating Apple’s 12 percent.
After maintaining the No. 2 place in the North American mobile phone market until the third quarter of 2011, LG Electronics was overtaken by Apple thereafter. LG Electronics, however, regained the second place there thanks to the growing popularity of its brand-new models such as the Optimus G and the Nexus 4, plus a lukewarm market response to Apple’s iPhone 5.
As of the end of December 2012, LG Electronics’ Optimus G was sold more than 1 million units worldwide. Amid the sluggish performance of Apple, Motorola and HTC also saw their market share in North America rise to 9 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Samsung Electronics maintained its lead with a share of 33 percent.

LG전자, 애플 밀어내고 북미 휴대전화 시장 '2위'
LG전자가 1년여 만에 북미 휴대전화 시장에서 2위 자리를 탈환했다.
20일 홍콩 기반의 시장조사기관 카운터포인트 리서치에 따르면 지난 12월 북미 휴대전화 시장에서 LG전자는 점유율 13%를 기록했다. 애플의 12%를 누르고 월간 기준으로 2위에 올랐다.
LG전자는 2011년 3분기까지 줄곧 북미 시장 2위를 지켜왔으나 아이폰4S 출시 이후 1년여 동안 애플에 자리를 내줬다. 하지만 지난 12월부터 아이폰5에 대한 시장 반응이 미적지근해진데다 옵티머스G와 넥서스4 등 제품이 인기를 얻으면서 순위가 올라갔다.
옵티머스G는 지난해 말을 기준으로 세계 시장에서 100만대 이상 판매됐다. LG전자는 지난해 9월 미국의 시장조사기관 제이디파워의 고객만족도 조사에서 피처폰 분야 1위를 차지한 바 있다.
애플의 부진을 틈타 모토로라(9%)와 HTC(8%)도 북미 점유율을 높였다. 삼성전자는 33%의 점유율을 보이며 부동의 선두업체 자리를 지켰다.
