Intel Korea Ltd.
'Wherever you see Wi-Fi today, expect to see WiMAX tomorrow'
The following is an interview with president HS Lee, Intel Korea Ltd. on the occasion of The Wireless Broadband World Forum 2006....Ed.
Q: In terms of WiBro (Wireless Broadband) service, which profit model is Intel seeing at the moment

WiMAX is the only broadband wireless technology that can cost-effectively deliver personal broadband -in other words, deliver multimegabit performance of your home broadband connection "on the go." The WiMAX service supports service delivery at mass market price points for consumer adoption - and at which service providers can be profitable.
Intel's focus is on enabling lower subscriber acquisition costs with integrated WiFi + WiMAX notebooks and mobile CE devices. Wherever you see Wi-Fi today, expect to see WiMAX tomorrow. Pairing the two will bring ultimate mobility in personal broadband.
Intel's single chip, multi-band Wi-Fi/WiMAX radio and WiMAX PC Card will add wireless connectivity to mobile and ultra mobile devices. Intel continues to advance its Intel Centrino mobile technology-based platforms.
Intel has taken a strong leadership role in helping to drive WiMAX standards, interoperability, and certification. However, with 100's of member companies, the WiMAX Forum and the 802.16 standard are global cooperative efforts not dominated by any one company.
We have heard that Intel takes the initiative in WiMAX Forum. Please elaborate on Intel's role such as WiMAX standard diffusion.
Intel has played a leadership role early on in the establishment and growth of the WiMAX Forum, however, today the Forum is a truly global effort supported by hundreds of companies.
The WiMAX Forum now has 368 WiMAX Forum Member Companies
* 136 service providers
* 78 silicon component suppliers
* 85 Ecosystem/Applications/Content
* 71 system vendors The WiMAX Forum has been critical to the success of WiMAX in the establishment of standards, certification, interoperability etc.
* WiMAX is quickly taking off worldwide with over 175 trials and over 35 commercial networks today.
What do you think about Korean companies' WiBro business outlook at home and abroad
As fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) accelerates worldwide, the multi-megabit broadband wireless business opportunity such as mobile WiMAX technology based WiBro service in Korea is emerging. To enjoy the economy of scale of mobile WiMAX business worldwide, the number of IEEE802.16e-2005 standard based mobile WiMAX markets should grow. It would give Korean mobile WiMAX companies more room to develop a high quality of price-competitive commercial systems for domestic and overseas customers. It is also very important that Korean mobile WiMAX companies try to gain more field experiences with IEEE802.16e-2005 compliant commercial systems and services to sustain their competitiveness against overseas competitors.
Which advice would Intel like to give for Korean WiBro business providers to activate their WiBro business more briskly
Since Korea's mobile service markets have grown to a maturity stage with high market penetration, it seems to be very important to develop value-added services. To this end, the development of multi-mode multi-band devices with international roaming capabilities is considered essential. Intel will help Korean mobile WiMAX device manufacturers develop the mobile WiMAX devices for regional Asia-Pacific roaming in the timeframe 2007-2008 such as notebook and PDA.
Afterwards multimode mobile WiMAX CEs with global roaming capabilities are expected to be delivered to customers.
