SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Display has passed the 300-million mark in cumulative production of OLED panels on January 24. Piling all of the 300 million OLED panels on top of one another would be equivalent to more than 68 times the height of Mt. Everest.
Since Samsung Display broke the 200-million milestone in May 2012, it has produced 5.4 units of OLED panels per second or 470,000 units per day and broke the 300-million mark in seven months.
It took four and a half years for Samsung Display to reach the 100-million level. But, thereafter, it achieved the 200-million goal in 11 months and 300 million in seven months. At present, Samsung Display commands a market share of 98 percent in the global OLED market.

삼성디스플레이 OLED 생산 3억개 돌파…에베레스트산 68개 높이
삼성디스플레이가 생산한 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 패널이 24일 누적 3억개를 돌파했다. 눕혀서 쌓을 경우 총 600km에 이르는 규모로 에베레스트산(8850m) 68개를 세운 높이와 같다.
이날 회사 측에 따르면 작년 5월 생산량 2억개를 넘긴 이후 매 1초당 5.4개, 하루 평균 47만개의 제품을 생산해 7개월 만에 다시 3억개를 돌파했다. 하루 생산한 OLED 패널로 여의도 63빌딩(높이 약 249m)을 약 4개 올릴 수 있는 셈이다.
특히 2007년 1월 OLED를 첫 생산한 뒤 1억개를 넘어서기까지는 총 4년 반이 걸렸지만 이후 1억개에서 2억개는 11개월, 3억개 돌파는 7개월로 기간이 빠르게 단축되고 있다.
삼성디스플레이는 전 세계 OLED 시장의 98%를 차지하며 업계 선두를 달리고 있다. 플렉서블·투명 등 미래 디스플레이연구개발과 양산에도 속도를 내고 있다.
김기남 삼성디스플레이 사장은 "지난 6년간 OLED 산업의 성장을 이끌어왔다" 며 "대형 OLED, 플렉서블 디스플레이 등 신기술에 과감하게 도전해 혁신을 주도하겠다"고 말했다.
