SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electro-Mechanics and LG Innotek (LGIT), Korea’s top two parts suppliers, saw their 2012 sales surge to all-time highs on the back of the booming smartphone market. The popularity of high-end smartphones led to a spike in demand for high-resolution camera modules, MLCC (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors) and all-in-one TSP (touch screen panels). In particular, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, the two biggest corporate customers of the two parts purveyors, launched their next-generation smartphones last year, therefore jacking up the two parts companies’ sales to a greater degree. Samsung Electro-Mechanics posted nearly KRW 8 trillion in annual sales; LG Innotek’s annual sales far exceeded KRW 5 trillion after four consecutive quarters of surpluses.
In the fourth quarter of 2012, Samsung Electro-Mechanics notched up about KRW 2.07 trillion in sales, KRW 145 billion in operating profit and KRW 97 billion in net profit. Its sales and operating profit rose 25% and 49% year-on-year, respectively. Yet, they fell 5% and 21% on a quarterly basis. In 2012, LG Innotek’s annual sales and operating profit stood at KRW 5.3 trillion (up 16.8% year-on-year) and KRW 77.2 billion, respectively.
