SEOUL, KOREA – Ha Sung-min, CEO of SK Telecom, said on February 3 that SK Telecom successfully demonstrated Transmission Mode 9 (TM-9), a LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology developed in partnership with Ericsson.
TM-9 is a LTE-A specification that was set by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to define the way of transmission between mobile devices and base stations.
SK Telecom explained that it developed TM-9 to build an optimal network environment, characterized by much-boosted base station capacity and minimized interference between base stations, since data transmission speed and capacity grow in importance in the upcoming LTE-A environment.
TM-9 enables base stations to distinguish mobile devices and send different demodulation reference signals (DM-RS) to each mobile device located within the coverage area. In addition, since the optimum data transmission environment is selected for each mobile, the speed of data transmission will be satisfactory.
SK Telecom and Ericsson announced that the demonstration showed that TM-9 was capable of raising the data transmission rate of mobile devices by 10% to 15% in areas of inter-cell interference.
