SEOUL, KOREA – The exports of Korean contents are projected to break the USD 5 billion mark, largely backed by the game industry that is expected to take up over 58% (USD 3 billion) of the total content exports.
Releasing “2012 Outlook on the Korean Content Industry,” the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea and Korea Creative Contents Agency predicted that the 2013 total sales of the Korean content industry will climb about 9.5% year-on-year to KRW 97 trillion while its exports will gain 8.9% year-on-year to USD 5.23 billion. Such rosy forecasts were made in view of expected recoveries in the domestic and global economies and the expansion of the smartphone market.
Above all, the game industry is forecast to ascend 8.9% year-on-year to USD 3 billion, accounting for 58% of the total content exports. Sales of the game industry are expected to reach KRW 12.5 trillion, up 19% year-on-year. Market creation through smart devices, resultant growth in demand (both domestic and global), the expansion of Korea’s export markets from the existing major game importers (e.g. the US and China) to emerging markets in Southeast Asia and South America were all factored in.
