Power-IT / Power-IT National Project
Power-IT standardization will decide ultimate success or failure of power-IT business
Korea's "Power-IT" (meaning the convergence of electric power technology and information and communication technology, similar to 'intelligent power system and apparatus technology') standardization project is expected to determine the ultimate success or failure of Korea's budding power-IT project and related business. The business community is thus watching the recent launch of the 'Power-IT Standardization Forum' with keen interest.

Recently, the megatrend of industrial changes is often cited as innovation by the fusion of technologies. The electric industry is no exception. Many worldleading companies such as ABB, Siemens and others are already introducing into the market with a variety of innovative power system devices, apparatus and software solutions, based on conventional power technology combined with information and communication technologies.
What is "Power-IT"
Hardware, software, and value-added services based on information and communication technologies which are organized collectively so that all information about overall electric power system areas, which comprise generation, transmission, distribution, and power market information, can be easily transmitted and processed to increase value of customers or operators. |
Director Kwun Young-Han of the "Power-IT National Project of Korea," who came to the Forum, pointed out: "The Power-IT project should play an essential role to revolutionize our power industry's paradigm and to lead technology innovation of the energy sector. However, we have to confess and worry about the technology gap between us and advanced countries in the power- IT field as well".
Concerning the significance as well as importance of standardization in the power-IT business, Kwun notes first of all that recent technology development competition depends primarily on the standard competition. Though no matter how we may develop excellent technology, the director said that we could hardly succeed in the world market if standardization activities don't follow.
He noted that in order for the power- IT business to advance to the rank of advanced countries, the technology development and standardization projects had better proceed simultaneously, the Forum came to be established.
In that regard, how to advance standardization projects and how to cope with international standard competition will be a key to business success, the launch of the Forum is very significant and timely, Kwun emphasized.
In consideration of the fact that the power-IT project aims to make inroads into the global market ultimately, Kwun underscores that the Forum plans to participate vigorously in the international standard community and to propose over 70 cases international standards in next few years.
