SEOUL, KOREA - Korea's largest mobile telecom service company SK Telecom said on February 5 that the number of subscribers who have changed their handsets for the first five days in February has increased rapidly despite the Korea Communications Commission-imposed three-week ban on signing up for new subscribers for granting excessive subsidies on mobile phone devices.

The new program is designed to prevent attrition of existing members during the suspension time by offering long-term subscribers (longer than 18 months since last handset purchase) a discount of up to 270,000 won for a new mobile phone.

For the month of January, the daily average number of subscribers who changed their devices was 9,900. But for five days between January 31 and February 4 during which the ban was in effect, the daily average number has been 29,400.
