SEOUL, KOREA - SK telecom’s research to protect the global environment has been adopted as an official report of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the first time in Korea and is to be disseminated to about 200 countries. SK telecom (represented by Ha Seong-min) announced 7th that its recent ‘research on calculating social greenhouse gas reduction potential by using ICT service’ had been accepted as ITU’s international report and would be published.
The research by the Korean telecommunication giant together with major local research organizations such as National Radio Research Agency, Korea Association for ICT Promotion and others quantifies the effect of ICT on social greenhouse gas reduction.
The result of the study is the first to be acknowledged by an international organization. ITU is going to distribute the research result to about 200 governments and other 700 international organizations and agencies for them to come up with related national and international policies.
According to SKT, the research shows active utilization of ICT service will greatly contribute to national greenhouse gas reduction.

지구촌 환경 보호를 위한 SK텔레콤 연구 결과가 국내 최초로 국제전기통신연합(ITU) 공식 보고서로 채택돼 세계 200여개국에 전파된다.
SK텔레콤(대표 하성민)은 자사가 발표한 `ICT서비스를 활용한 사회적 온실가스 감축 잠재량 산정 연구`가 ITU 국제 보고서로 채택, 발간된다고 7일 밝혔다.
보고서로 채택된 SK텔레콤 연구는 세계적 화두인 사회적 온실가스 감축에 ICT가 미치는 영향과 효과를 정량화한 것이다.
지난 2011년 국립전파연구소, 한국정보통신진흥협회 등 국내 주요 연구기관과 함께 실시간 내비게이션, 이헬스, 이러닝, 스마트그리드 등 총 14개 서비스를 대상으로 2020년 서비스별 온실가스 잠재 감축량을 산정한 연구다.
이번 연구는 세계 최초로 국제기관이 인정한 ICT 분야 사회적 온실가스 감축 연구 사례 보고서다. ITU가 먼저 SK텔레콤 보고서 게재를 요청했고, 통상 보고서에 2~3개 기업 사례를 함께 싣는 관례를 깨고 SK텔레콤 연구결과를 단독으로 게재하며 중요성을 인정했다.
이번에 발간하는 보고서는 ITU가 매년 세계 200여개국 정부와 700여개 국제 기관·단체에 배포, 각 국가 정책 수립과 세계적 활용에 기초가 되는 공식 보고서다. 국내에서는 SK텔레콤 연구결과 게재가 최초다.
SK텔레콤 연구 결과에 따르면 ICT서비스의 적극적인 활용이 국가 온실가스 절감에 크게 기여할 수 있다. 조사한 14개 ICT서비스 활용으로 감축이 예상되는 국가 온실가스 배출량은 2020년까지 약 15%(약 1억1000만톤 CO₂)로 예상되며, 절감하는 에너지 경제가치는 2020년 한 해에만 72조원에 달할 것으로 기대된다.
김정수 SK텔레콤 CSR실장은 “보고서 단독 채택은 사회적 온실가스 감축 분야의 선도적 노력이 세계적으로 인정을 받았다는 데 의미가 있다”며 “앞으로도 이 분야에 대한 지속적인 연구 개발로 세계 ICT 업계를 이끌어 사회적 온실가스 감축에 기여하겠다”고 밝혔다.
