SEOUL, KOREA – Patent applications related to ultra HD TVs, which are in high demand thanks to their delivery of vivid images, are being filed in a brisk manner.
On Tuesday, Korean Intellectual Property Office said a total of 129 patent applications for ultra HD transmission and condensation technologies were filed over the past six years from 2007 to 2012.
The number of patent applications has continued to rise annually - nine in 2007, 17 in 2008, 21 in 2009, 26 in 2010, 28 in 2011 and 28 in 2012.
By technology, 56% (72 cases) of the total patent applications were related to video condensation technologies, 19% (24 cases) broadcast transmission technologies and 25% (33 cases) application technologies.
By patent applicant, companies filed 60 patent applications (47%), research institutes 43 cases (33%), universities 21 cases (16%) and others five cases (4%).
Ultra HDTVs (7680×4320 or 3840×2160 pixels) boast a much higher resolution than existing full-HD TVs (1920×1080 pixels).
