SEOUL, KOREA – KT introduces virtualization technology to its fixed-line networks in preparation for an expected surge in fixed-line data traffic following growth in the number of fixed wireless All-IP users.
Seong-mok Oh, the head of KT’s Network Division said on Tuesday, “Drifting away from the previous fixed-line structure, we will transform our fixed-line networks into ones based on cloud communication centers (CCC).
He continued, “The previous fixed-line structure is unable to deal with an upsurge in data traffic. With the evolution of home terminals such as HDTV and UDTV, fixed-line traffic is projected to zoom up 500 - 1000 times over the next five years.”
CCC-based communications stations are designed to connect to general communications stations and wireless base stations via Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP), therefore dramatically reducing the number of communications stations to 56 and enlarging each station’s coverage to 20km (up from 4km under the previous fixed-line structure).
Oh predicted, “In the past, roadmaps for fixed-line and wireless services were drawn up separately. But following KT's smart home strategy via Smart Home Pad and LTE, things will be integrated into “Broadband All-IP.”
