SEOUL, KOREA – Hyundai and Kia are about to hit the 50 million in cumulative overseas sales, a remarkable feat which will crown their 39 years of hard work in overseas markets and prove that the Korean auto industry successfully entrenched itself as a major global player after having languished on the outskirts of the global auto market for many years.
On Wednesday, Hyundai and Kia said their cumulative worldwide sales, which reached 48.3 million at the end of last year, is on track to break the 50 million market next month given their average monthly overseas sales of 500,000 – 600,000 units.
Such a milestone will be achieved in less than 40 years after Hyundai Motor exported six units of the Pony (Hyundai’s’ first model) to Ecuador in 1976 and Kia Motors shipped ten units of the Brisa Pickup to Qatar in 1975.
If putting 50 million units of Hyundai Motor's Avante in a row, its length would be long enough to circle the Earth 5.7 times.
