SEOUL, KOREA - Some argued that Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) have evolved into a “money-making industry.” A decade of R&D finally translates into corporate sales.
At the Workshop on the Commercialization of CNTs, held in Seoul on Thursday, Young-hee Lee (professor at Sungkyunkwan University) said, “CNTs are in transit from R&D labs to a market. Some companies already have made a profit on CNTs. A case in point is Taiwan's Foxconn which applied CNTs to touch screen panels (TSP).”
Professor Lee predicted that Korean companies will soon launch CNT-based products. Concurring with Professor Lee, other workshop attendees, such as Hanwha Chemical, LG Chem and JEIO, said that CNT-based products like CNT paint and PMCs (Polymer Matrix Composites) are hitting the market briskly.
Predicting the CNT market will grow as big as the silicon market over the next decade, Professor Lee mentioned, “The commercialization of CNTs requires governmental support for industry-academia cooperation.
The Ministry of Knowledge Economy is set to expand support for the commercialization of CNTs.
