SEOUL, KOREA – The Korean government has decided to invest KRW 2.15 trillion in the development of disaster and safety management technologies so as to boost public safety by obtaining 80% of advanced nations’ custom-tailored safety management technologies by 2017.
On Thursday, National Science and Technology Commission (NSTC) said “The Second Comprehensive Plan for the Development of Disaster and Safety Management Technologies” has been passed. The Second Comprehensive Plan is an inter-ministerial scheme that will be implemented by all of the new Korean government’s ministries.
The NSTC said KRW 1.27 trillion, up from the First Comprehensive Plan’s KRW 880.2 billion, will be ploughed into the Second Comprehensive Plan that contains five implementation strategies and 15 tasks.
The Second Comprehensive Plan was drawn up as Korea has suffered from astronomical disaster damages. While the occurrence of disasters and accidents has continued to pick up, Korea’s prevention against disasters was found to leave much to be desired. In the anti-disaster technology sector, Korea’s technology gap with the most advanced nation technology-wise (the US) is 8.4 years.
