SEOUL, KOREA - It is reported that Korean LTE subscribers are using the best service in the world.
According to ‘The Result of Evaluation of Communications Service Quality for 2012’ announced by the Korea Communications Commission, SK telecom, KT and LG U+ are all highly rated, having LTE voice communication success rate of 97.5% or more.
Such a high rate comes under the category of ‘S Level’, the best out of the clarification defined by International Telecommunication Union. Six major global cities including New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and others were rated at ‘B Level’ (90% ~ 95%) on average last November, showing that of Korea is way above their evaluation results.
Not only voice communications but also data service quality of the Korean telecommunications service providers has achieved ‘S Level’, while the six cities received ‘A Level’ (95% ~ 97.5%) for that field.
“It has been confirmed that the Korean telecommunications service providers have the world’s best LTE service quality even if they are considered as latecomers in that area. We believe such a great achievement is made thanks to the continuous investments and efforts the telecommunications companies put into LTE field and its quality improvement,” says the commission.

우리나라 LTE 가입자가 세계 최고 수준의 서비스를 이용하는 것으로 확인됐다.
방송통신위원회가 21일 발표한 `2012년 통신서비스 품질 평가결과`에 따르면 SK텔레콤과 KT, LG유플러스의 LTE 음성통화 성공률은 97.5% 이상으로 평가됐다.
국제전기통신연합(ITU)의 등급분류 중 최고등급인 `S등급`에 해당한다. 지난해 11월 실시한 뉴욕과 도쿄, 홍콩 등 세계 6개 도시 평균 B등급(90% 이상~95% 미만)보다 월등한 수준이다.
음성통화뿐만 아니라 데이터 서비스 품질도 세계 6개 도시의 A등급(95% 이상∼97.5% 미만)에 앞선 S등급으로 평가됐다. 이통 3사의 업로드·다운로드 품질은 모두 S등급으로 조사됐다. 평가 대상지역 200곳 중 2곳(KT 1곳, LG유플러스 1곳)에만 전송 성공률이 미흡한 것으로 지적됐다.
LTE 전체 구간에서 평균 웹 서핑 시간은 1.1초로 나타났다. KT와 SK텔레콤이 1.1초, LG유플러스는 1.3초를 기록했다.
3세대(3G) 이동통신 데이터 서비스 품질도 우수했다. SK텔레콤이 다운로드·업로드 모두 S등급, KT는 업로드 S등급, 다운로드 A등급으로 나타났다. 3G 웹서핑 시간은 2.7초(SK텔레콤 2.4초, KT 3.1초)로 전년 4.7초와 비교해 개선됐지만 국제기준인 2초에는 미흡했다.
와이파이(WiFi) 다운로드 서비스는 이통 3사 모두 A등급을 기록한 가운데 업로드는 SK텔레콤이 S등급으로, KT와 LG유플러스는 각각 A등급으로 조사됐다.
와이파이 웹서핑 시간은 평균 1.7초로 전년 3.5초에 비해 크게 개선된 것으로 조사됐다. 초고속인터넷 서비스도 `S등급 (95Mbps 이상)`을 충족했다. 통신사와 케이블TV사업자의 근소한 차이는 존재했다. KT와 SK브로드밴드, LG유플러스가 업로드·다운로드 모두 S등급을, CJ헬로비전과 씨앤앰, 티브로드는 업·다운로드 모두 A등급(85~95Mbps)으로 측정됐다.
방통위는 “우리나라 이통사의 LTE 서비스 개시가 늦었음에도 불구하고 품질수준은 세계 최고인 것으로 확인됐다”며 “이동통신사가 LTE 투자를 지속하고 품질개선에 노력한 결과로 판단된다”고 말했다. 방통위는 품질 미흡으로 나타난 지역에 대해 해당 사업자에 1분기 이내에 개선할 것을 권고하고 올해 평가 시 해당지역을 측정지역에 포함시킬 예정이다. 또 올해 VoLTE 평가도 시범 실시할 방침이다.
